Dr. Magovern recommends applying a nail-strengthening base coat to clean nails before every (Russian manicure, acrylic manicure, or otherwise) to prevent breakage.
“Nails should be cleaned with soap and water prior to application,” says Yankee. “I like to use a nail brush to be sure to get into the sidewalls and cuticle area to remove any debris.” She also suggests swiping nails with isopropyl alcohol to achieve a squeaky-clean surface, so the nail can absorb the benefits of the strengthener.
Results will vary based on the product’s formulation and the condition of your nails, but you should notice more durable nails after a few weeks if you’re using your topical strengthener regularly, says Dr. Magovern. She recommends using these products as a preventive measure rather than reactively. And if you’re trying to grow out damaged nails, it’s best to avoid polish altogether.
