As elegant as they come, Audrey Hepburn’s gamine beauty made her one of the world’s most beloved muses. From her strong brows and penchant for a feline flick to that enviable and effortless pixie crop, she knew the power of a classic look—and, crucially, how to accentuate her features. She also approached her beauty routine with a sense of playfulness and fun. “I believe in manicures. I believe in overdressing. I believe in primping at leisure and wearing lipstick. I believe in pink. I believe happy girls are the prettiest girls,” she once said.
In an early ’70s edition of Vogue, Hepburn laid out her wellbeing and beauty regimen, which included “eight or nine hours” of sleep to make her “completely happy”; personally washing her hair every “four or five days” (“salons make me restless”); a preference for “pretty-smelling bath[s]” with Floris oil; and minimal make-up. “I’ve never used much make-up. Only on my eyes, and I do them more or less as I always have… black liner and mascara, dark-brown eyebrow pencil… And I still use a very, very pale pink lipstick…. No base… No foundation. It isn’t a question of wanting to look the same; I prefer an unmade-up look simply because it’s better for me.”
As well as her bobs and bouffants, headgear was an Audrey Hepburn hallmark: whether a neatly bow-topped Alice band, or an unfussy white length of fabric keeping her hair off her face while practicing at the barre. She loved a headscarf both on and off screen, often knotting a silk scarf over a beehive, with her micro-bangs peeking out. The fluffy, mini and side-swept bangs, of course, and her bushy brows are frequently paid homage to by celebrities today.
And now, it’s been confirmed that the sprite-like Lily Collins will channel Hepburn in a new drama. Based on Sam Wasson’s best-selling Fifth Avenue, 5 A.M.: Audrey Hepburn, Breakfast at Tiffany’s and the Dawn of the Modern Woman, it will tell the behind-the-scenes story of Breakfast at Tiffany’s production. Collins will don that blonde-streaked bouffant, thick lashes, and matte lippie that made Hepburn-as-Golightly a big screen beauty icon.
To celebrate that, Vogue takes a look back at some of her best beauty moments.
