Nicolas Cage As John Madden In David O. Russell Movie

Amazon’s Prime Video used its Christmas evening game Thursday between the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs to pop a teaser trailer for Madden, David O. Russell‘s biopic of sorts of Hall of Fame football coach, TV analyst and video game brand icon John Madden.

The streamer plans a Thanksgiving 2026 release for the pic, fitting given it was Madden and his CBS partner Pat Summerall who helped make the NFL Thanksgiving Day game a staple in homes (who had heard of a turducken before Madden?)

Nicolas Cage plays Madden, the skilled effervescent and coach of the Oakland Raiders who took owner Al Davis’ band of misfits all the way to an unlikely victory in the 1977 Super Bowl.

Russell picks up the action from there, charting the unlikely path that took Madden from the NFL sidelines to somehow becoming the brains and brand behind what Madden NFL, what would become one of the bestselling video game franchises of all time. That collaboration with EA Sports (John Mulaney plays EA founder Trip Hawkins) was the entry point into Madden’s NFL broadcasting career.

“There is only one John Madden. They didn’t make another one,” Christian Bale‘s Davis growls in the teaser. “Football wouldn’t be football without him.”

Kathryn Hahn also stars as Madden’s wife, Virginia, while Sienna Miller plays Davis’ wife, Carol. Shane Gillis also stars.

Russell directed from a script he wrote following an earlier version by Cambron Clark. Todd Black is producing through his Escape Artists banner along with partners Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch, and Jonathan Shukat alongside Russell and Matthew Budman. Escape Artists’ David Bloomfield is executive producer.
