Dress Code: Gabriella Khalil Never Shies Away From a Power Outfit

A breakfast event pops up for tomorrow. What’s a failsafe outfit you for an early morning?

I always turn to a really good jacket to elevate an outfit—especially at the last minute. This could be a blazer, which I’ll pair with jeans and a heel. Otherwise, I love a leather jacket or even an oversized bomber jacket for a casual but chic look.

What type of dress code fills you with dread? And what’s your workaround for that?

If there’s no dress code or understanding of the type of event—that fills me with uncertainty. I always prefer to really understand the dress code. In times when I am unsure, I will stick to elevated and classic tailored pieces that feel fancy enough to work for either cocktail or casual vibes. I would say my general rule, though, is to be more dressed up than too casual…it never hurts!

A luncheon is on the calendar. How might you approach putting together a look for that?

I love a pencil skirt, boots, and a simple top with great accessories to match. This is my go-to, more often than not.

What are your thoughts on costume parties? All in with the DIY, or politely decline?

I don’t really go to that many. Usually my initial reaction is an eye roll, but then when I get into the theme, I have fun and I love it! Deep down, I love a themed party, but they do take a lot of extra work. I went to a party a few years ago where the dress code was to only wear red, white, or black. It was one of my favorite parties because it felt so thematic and the palette was really strong for the event, but it also only required little effort on my part to find a look.
