Amal Clooney and her husband George just left Milan, Italy, where we assume they were attending the Winter Olympic Games, and while Amal looked as polished as always, we couldn’t help but notice that her choice of jeans was especially casual for a woman most often seen in either evening wear or business formal. In fact, her bootcut, light-wash jeans even have a hint of (intentional) dirt staining on the front for that lived-in, rugged look.
Mrs. Clooney paired her denim with a cropped black coat over a navy blue knit top and accessorized with a leather handbag and oversize sunglasses. She kept her makeup simple and matte and added dangly earrings for just a touch of sparkle. Also, we know her engagement ring is old news at this point, but dang! That’s not a rock, it’s a boulder.

Though they’re a bit obscured by her floor-skimming hems, we’d be remiss not to mention those square-toe black boots. They’ve got just enough weight to them to ground the bleached tone of her jeans. And, for a lighter look in the spring, Clooney could easily swap these chunky boots for sandals or wedges and ditch the coat. Et voila! Trans-seasonal dressing at its finest.
Circling back to these jeans, did anyone else immediately think of the mid-’00s when we regularly wore jeans with funky tops, draped with scarves or, yes, under dresses? Obviously, Amal Clooney took the look in a totally different direction, but it’s still an intriguing choice, one I’m not sure we’ve seen her make before.
