Lana Del Rey’s ‘Cloud Curls’ Are Spring’s Dreamiest Hair Trend

Last month, Del Rey’s go-to celebrity colorist Tracey Cunningham described her recent color as “Poet Bronde—moody, dimensional, quietly iconic.” Cunningham shared an Instagram reel in which she darkened Del Rey’s base tone and roots, while her mid-lengths and ends stayed a lighter caramel tone.

Del Rey’s current color looks expertly color-melted—a technique that borrows from balayage to “create a seamless blend of tones with no harsh lines,” celebrity stylist Nick Stenson told Glamour. Since it usually incorporates natural base tones, especially at the root, color-melting can give you a low-maintenance refresh that won’t sending you running back to the salon for touch-ups. And, as Del Rey proved: “This look works on all hair types, but it’s ideal for wavy or curly hair because the texture enhances the dimension and movement of the blend,” Stenson says.

Ready for Lana Del Rey hair this spring? After booking your custom color-melt, you’ll want to invest in some soft-curl products. If your hair is naturally textured, “Apply a lightweight, strong-hold, curl-enhancing foam or mousse through damp hair, scrunching upward to encourage lift,” says Smith. From there, he recommends using medium-heat to diffuse (tipping your head upside down for “floating volume”) then separating your tightest curls, shaking out your roots, and scrunching and fluffing until you reach a cloud-like shape.

Styling this look on straight hair? Grab a small curling wand. “Take irregular sections—not straight lines—winding the hair around the curling iron and holding it 90 degrees from your scalp,” Smith says. “Gently finger-comb the curls out as you go, and use a texture spray for hold and a modern, airy finish.”
