The title is Three Incestuous Sisters, and it doesn’t get more normal from there. A less well-known illustrated fable from Audrey Niffenegger, author of The Time Traveler’s Wife, is getting the big screen treatment 20 years after publication, and some major talents have signed on, both in front of and behind the camera. As the name suggests, the story follows three sisters, but if you’re thinking it’s a sexploitation pic…well…that remains to be seen.
Key details are being kept under wraps, but here’s what we know so far.
What is Three Incestuous Sisters about?
The film is an adaptation of author Audrey Niffenegger’s novel. In addition to being a novelist, Niffenegger is an accomplished printmaker, and it seems that The Three Incestuous Sisters (the movie apparently drops the “the”) is more visual than prosaic; it was originally created as a limited edition, purposefully not a bestseller.
Per a summary on Niffenegger’s website: “Ophile, Clothilde, and Bettine are sisters who live together in a large house by the sea. One night their neighbor, the Lighthouse Keeper, is killed by lightning during a terrible storm. His son, Paris, returns to take his father’s place at the lighthouse. Ophile and Bettine fall in love with Paris, and he returns Bettine’s affections. Terrible rivalries ensue. A peculiar baby is born. Havoc and revenge result. Eventually some people die and others are reconciled.”

Who is in the cast?
On February 27, 2026, Deadline reported that Jessie Buckley, Saoirse Ronan, and Dakota Johnson would portray the titular sisters, with Josh O’Connor also on board.
Who is writing and directing?
Italian director Alice Rohrwacher, who previously directed O’Connor in 2023’s La Chimera, will direct from a script by herself and My Year of Rest and Relaxation novelist Ottessa Moshfegh. Reporting suggests it is “loosely” based on the book.
When does the movie come out?
With principal photography set to begin soon, we’re looking at 2027 or 2028.
