It’s time to put on some makeup, turn on the 8-track and pull the wig down from the shelf, as Hedwig & the Angry Inch celebrates 25 years.
Writer, director and star John Cameron Mitchell is going on tour across the United States and Canada with a 4K restoration of the 2001 cult movie musical adaptation of his off-Broadway hit, kicking off June 14 in Orlando, Florida.
Mitchell will be in attendance for the tour, produced by Jeremy Wein for ThisMyShow Presents, participating in a live post-screening conversation, audience Q&A and a special acoustic performance, as well as post-show meet-and-greets.
“When we made the Hedwig film, with the help of hundreds of people, we weren’t surprised when it was initially a flop—just like Rocky Horror, Willy Wonka and The Wizard of Oz,” said Mitchell in a statement. “New things take time. It took word-of-mouth, home video, people passing it one by one to their friends and lovers to get it around the world to the people who needed it. We had no idea it would travel this far. Twenty-five years later, in the face of the current backlash of hate and fear, I’m moved that audiences still see themselves in it—and still want to gather in a room together to experience it.”
Based on Mitchell and Stephen Trask’s 1998 stage musical, Hedwig & the Angry Inch follows the titular East German rocker as they marry an American GI and undergo a sex change operation in order to relocate to the US, where they fall in love with teen musician Tommy, who steals their music and becomes famous.
Premiering at Sundance Film Festival in 2001, Hedwig & the Angry Inch won the Audience Award (Dramatic) and Directing Award (Dramatic) for Mitchell.
