Carlos López Estrada Says Disney’s ‘Robin Hood’ Remake Is “Dead”

Director Carlos López Estrada shared an update on Disney‘s remake of Robin Hood, saying it was not moving forward.

During a Reddit AMA, the director of Blindspotting was asked about the live-action-animated hybrid film in development.

“It’s dead, sadly,” López Estrada replied, adding, “I say sadly because I actually thought there was something really special (and original!) there. Some truly extraordinary music we had figured out for it.”

In a second reply to the same question, the filmmaker noted that he has envisioned redeveloping the story and bringing it to life independently.

“I keep daydreaming about doing it independently with different characters,” he added.

In 2020, it was reported that Disney was working on a remake of the 1976 animated classic Robin Hood for Disney+. The studio had reportedly tapped Kari Granlund, who penned the Lady and the Tramp remake, to write the screenplay of the new adaptation. Justin Springer, who produced the 2019 live-action adaptation of Dumbo, was also set to produce the Robin Hood remake.

The 1973 animated musical film was directed by Wolfgang Reitherman, produced by Walt Disney, and based on the legend of Robin Hood. The story follows the adventures of Robin Hood, Little John, and the inhabitants of Nottingham as they fight against the excessive taxation of Prince John, and Robin Hood wins the hand of Maid Marian.

Voice cast for Robin Hood included Brian Bedford, Monica Evans, Phil Harris, Roger Miller, Andy Devine, Peter Ustinov, Terry-Thomas, Carole Shelley, Pat Buttram, George Lindsey, among many others.
