As with the best foundation for mature skin, stick with concealers packed with skin care ingredients that replenish and protect the skin barrier, such as ceramides, peptides, and antioxidants. Meanwhile, humectants like hyaluronic acid and glycerin can help hydrate dry skin and, in turn, improve the appearance of fine lines and even hyperpigmentation.
“Applying less product is key for making concealer not settle in fine lines,” says Hurkman. Zheng cautions against overapplying, “the more product you use, the more likely it is to crease.” Makeup artist Monika Yadav recommends prepping the area with eye cream and, if needed, color-corrector before you apply any concealer.
Once you’ve chosen your concealer formula, apply a thin layer using either your fingers, a makeup brush, a Beautyblender, or an equivalent. “Tap your fingers over where you applied it, and it will remove any excess product that is not needed in that area. Applying thin layers of product is always best to keep the product in place,” Hurkman says. Lastly, Zhang recommends setting your concealer lightly with a fine powder, “just enough to lock it in without drying out the skin.” This creates the smoothest finish.
