Oscars Creative Team Teases ‘Bridesmaids’ & Marvel Reunions

The creative team for the 98th Oscars held a press conference Wednesday to tease some surprises for Sunday night’s award show. Among the surprises, executive producers Raj Kapoor and Katy Mullan brought up a couple of “huge reunions” to expect.

“There’s been rumors of what that [reunion] is, and we are very excited to announce that we have a Bridesmaids reunion that is going to be very special,” said Kapoor.

“There’s also going to be a Marvel reunion for the superhero fans, so we’re gonna have superstars and superheroes,” added Mullan. “And there is also going to be an extraterrestrial on the stage, so you can figure that one out.”

Host Conan O’Brien joined the executive producers for the discussion, as well as music director Michael Bearden, production designer Misty Buckley and supervising choreographer Mandy Moore. This will be O’Brien’s second time hosting the awards show, which he says is not just about the humor.

“It’s not just about being funny in the moment-to-moment, it’s also about acknowledging what this is about in the larger sense,” he said. “As the host … I’m the entryway for the person watching at home and the person that the audience members can relate to.”

The program will also feature multiple musical performances, such as “Golden” from KPop Demon Hunters and a celebration of Sinners. “This year, we chose Sinners because it’s the most-nominated film ever and has a beautiful music story,” Kapoor said. “It’s not just about the song, it’s really how Ryan [Coogler] integrated music and wove that into the entire story.

“We are celebrating that film with the film’s costumer. Ruth [E. Carter] has come on board to help us and we have Aakomon Jones, who is the film’s choreographer, working with us. We have that music team as well, that has not only given us the gift of that score, but that song [“I Lied to You”], and then we have all these amazing cast members, plus new people that weren’t even in the film, coming in to help celebrate that. We’ve kind of blown it up.”

Said O’Brien: “Big surprise is that I will be singing and dancing in the Sinners part of the show. Which was rejected by everyone, and I think rightfully so.”
