Qatar’s Doha Film Institute (DFI) has unveiled the 49 projects selected for the 2026 edition of its annual Qumra meeting which has been moved online due to the Iran War.
The incubator event will support 49 projects – spanning 27 features, nine series and 13 shorts – through online networking and mentorship with the event running from March 27 to April 8.
Feature projects include Madness and Honey Days by Ahmed Yassin Al-Daradji, who made waves with Iraqi Venice-selected, Oscar entry Hanging Gardens; Hamlet From The Slums by Ahmed Fawzi-Saleh, whose Poisonous Roses was Egypt’s 2020 Oscar entry, and documentary Revolutionaries Never Die by Palestinian director Mohanad Yaqubi.
The 12th edition had been due to unfold in Doha with Diego Luna, Gael García Bernal, Alice Diop, Faouzi Bensaïdi and Gustavo Santaolalla in attendance as the events so-called Qumra masters, who give masterclasses and mentor filmmaker attendees.
Qumra is one of the most important meetings of the year for Indie directors and producers from across the Middle East and North Africa, with the event also inviting a smattering of non-MENA grantees.
Its 2025, attendees included Hasan Hadi’s The President’s Cake, which went on to win Cannes’ Caméra d’Or and make it onto the shortlist for the Best International Feature Film Academy Award; Erige Sehiri’s Promised Sky, which opened Cannes Un Certain Regard, and won best film at Marrakech, and Suzannah Mirghani’s Cotton Queen, which debuted in Venice.
The ongoing U.S.-Israel-Iran war, which is now in its 20th day, has rendered this impossible due to the fact that Iran has launched hundreds of missile and drone strikes on its Gulf neighbors in response to the U.S.-Israel military campaign.
“While we are deeply saddened by the current circumstances in the region, the decision to present Qumra 2026 online reflects Qatar’s resilience and its enduring commitment to continuity, even in the face of significant challenges,” said Doha Film Institute CEO Fatma Hassan Alremaihi.
“Our priority remains to ensure that filmmakers and their projects continue to benefit from meaningful exchange, mentorship and connection. This year’s selection highlights the courage and ambition of today’s filmmakers and the urgency of the stories they are compelled to tell. We are proud to see our nation strongly represented alongside powerful perspectives from across the world.”
