The tickets are sold out; the fans are lined up outside the Palacio de los Deportes, chanting, “DOJA! DOJA! DOJA!”; and Doja Cat herself—Vogue’s April 2026 cover star—is just backstage, figuring out her styling and getting her glam done before showtime in Mexico City.
Doja puts her one-of-a-kind looks together with the help of creative director Brett Alan Nelson. “We kind of spitball day of,” Doja says of her and Nelson’s process, admiring her retro blond bouffant and bangs. Aesthetically, the show is filled with callbacks to the heady 1980s; Doja cites Gary Numan, Nina Hagen, and Grace Jones as some of its key inspirations.
Soon enough, it’s time for sound check, and Doja launches into a rendition of “Jealous Type”—the lead single from her 2025 album, Vie—sounding for all the world like she’s already playing to an audience of thousands. Now that’s what we call (cover) star power.
