Donald Trump has called for a new, “modernised” nuclear arms control treaty between Washington and Moscow, instead of extending the expired New Start agreement.

“Rather than extend “NEW START” (A badly negotiated deal by the United States that, aside from everything else, is being grossly violated), we should have our Nuclear Experts work on a new, improved, and modernized Treaty that can last long into the future,” the US president wrote on social media on Thursday.

The New Start treaty, which caps the number of operational nuclear missiles and warheads for the US and Russia, expired on Thursday. Signed in 2010 and extended in 2021, it was the last legal check on the size of the world’s two largest nuclear arsenals.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for more details.
