Eric Dane‘s Euphoria family is mourning the news of his death at age 53, following an ALS diagnosis.
Series creator Sam Levinson remembered the actor, who played closeted patriarch Cal Jacobs on the HBO drama, sharing a statement with Deadline after Dane’s death on Thursday.
“I’m heartbroken by the loss of our dear friend Eric,” said Levinson. “Working with him was an honor. Being his friend was a gift. Eric’s family is in our prayers. May his memory be for a blessing.”
An HBO spokesperson said in a statement, “We are deeply saddened by the news of Eric Dane’s passing. He was incredibly talented and HBO was fortunate to have worked with him on three seasons of Euphoria. Our thoughts are with his loved ones during this difficult time.”
Last April, Dane announced his diagnosis, noting that he was “able to continue working” and “looking forward to returning” to his role as Cal on Season 3 of Euphoria, which filmed last year.
Dane’s family announced his death in a statement on Thursday. “With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS,” they said. “He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”
The family continued, “Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”
