Eurostar has warned of “severe delays” due to a fault in the power supply in the Channel Tunnel, threatening to disrupt travel for thousands of travellers.

The train operator said on Tuesday that because of a problem with the “overhead power supply in the Channel Tunnel and a subsequent failed Le Shuttle train”, it “strongly” advised all passengers to postpone their journey.

“We regret that trains that can run are subject to severe delays and last-minute cancellations,” it added.

The UK’s National Rail also warned passengers who had been planning to travel on the route that connects London and Paris of the risk of delays and cancellations.

The disruption is likely to be widely felt given that the Christmas and New Year periods are busy times for travel.

The Le Shuttle system transports road vehicles through the Channel Tunnel that connects the two countries.

Eurostar and Eurotunnel, part of Getlink group, did not immediately respond to requests for comment and further details.
