‘God Of War’ Game Creator Mocks Prime Video’s ‘Terrible’ First Image

It’s safe to say that God of War video game creator David Jaffe has some notes on the first-look image (above) Prime Video recently released of its forthcoming TV adaptation.

In a nearly seven-minute-long video reaction posted to his YouTube, David Jaffe ridiculed the photo as “so dumb” and a “terrible image.”

“I’m sure everybody’s trying real hard,” he said, chuckling.

The Twisted Metal creator noted he had no gripes with the series’ direction, such as its perceived similarity to the original design, explaining that he believes showrunner Ronald D. Moore is “awesome.” “I’m not worried about the show,” he clarified, “but I’m a little worried about: What the fuck is this?”

“Maybe they’re like, ‘Well, what we really want to focus on is the father-son story, and if we focus on him being like, rah, Spartan-rage and all that, maybe people are like, I don’t want to watch that show.’ OK, maybe, but then, at that point, could you find a picture that doesn’t look like he’s [Ryan Hurst’s Kratos] shitting in the woods?” he said.

While adding that he’s “not particularly interested” in the show, Jaffe enumerated several things he found “most offensive,” like Kratos looking “stupid” and taking issue with the product in Atreus’ (Callum Vinson) hair.

“It’s just weird — the way the whole image looks, he looks like he’s kind of a very confused little boy with way too much product in his hair,” he concluded. “None of these characters look very interesting or appealing — they look just dumb. Like if this was God of War: Dumb and Dumber edition.”

The live-action adaptation of PlayStation’s ancient mythology-themed video game, from Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, has already received a two-season order. It follows a father and son as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.
