‘Gundam’ Movie Casts Jason Clarke Opposite Sydney Sweeney (EXCLUSIVE)

EXCLUSIVE: Jason Clarke (A House of Dynamite) is set for a role alongside Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo in the live-action Gundam movie from Legendary that’s eyeing Netflix as its distributor, sources tell Deadline.

Reps for Netflix and Legendary declined comment. Both Clarke’s role and the film’s plot are being kept under wraps.

Co-developed by Legendary and franchise owner Bandai Namco Filmworks, this Gundam movie will be the first in live-action. Sweet Tooth showrunner Jim Mickle is directing from his own script and will also produce with his partner Linda Moran through their production company Nightshade. Centineo is also producing with his partner Enzo Marc.

A long-running multimedia franchise that pioneered the sci-fi subgenre known as “mecha,” revolving around giant fighting robots, Gundam launched with the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam in 1979. Created by Yoshiyuki Tomino, it continues to generate over $600 million annually. Legendary announced its development of a Gundam film in the spring of 2021, with Jordan Vogt-Roberts coming aboard as director following his work with the studio on its hit Montersverse installment Kong: Skull Island, though he’s since departed.

Recently reteaming with his Zero Dark Thirty director Kathryn Bigelow on the Netflix political thriller A House of Dynamite, Clarke was also seen last year playing convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh in Hulut’s limited series Murdaugh: Death in the Family. Most recently wrapping on the Warner Bros. action-thriller F.A.S.T. penned by Taylor Sheridan, his other credits of late include leading Apple’s The Last Frontier and playing ’70s Lakers coach Jerry West in HBO’s Winning Time: Rise of the Lakers Dynasty. He is repped by Robert Stein Management, CAA, and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman.
