In a little over a week, the 98th Academy Awards will take place in Los Angeles—and while many of the categories are feeling like a toss-up, it will be a shock if best actress goes to anyone other than Jessie Buckley. Having taken home prizes from the Critics Choice Awards, the SAG Actor Awards, the BAFTAs, and the Golden Globes for her devastating performance in Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet, Buckley is on a roll.
Earlier this week, ahead of the theatrical release of The Bride!—her second collaboration with Maggie Gyllenhaal, out now—Buckley sat down with The Run-Through guest hosts Taylor Antrim and Marley Marius to talk about it. “Maggie has a real vision, and there’s so much intention behind what she’s trying to say with her stories and why she’s choosing to tell a story at all,” Buckley said. (The pair previously worked together on The Lost Daughter, Gyllenhaal’s 2021 directorial debut.) “I think what she asks all of her actors, and herself, is to ask the question that’s gonna challenge you.”
Buckley—who gave birth to a daughter last year—also described toggling between “changing a nappy” and getting dressed up for red carpets during her overlapping press tours. The difficulties of that were mitigated somewhat by her work with stylist to the stars Danielle Goldberg, who empowered Buckley to let herself be seen in her changing body: “Right at the beginning, she was like, ‘I just wanna see you.’ And I felt like I could breathe for the first time.”
Also in this episode, The Run-Through gets a behind-the-scenes look at the Rick Owens and Saint Laurent shows in Paris. Between getting their makeup done and putting their clothes on, models Alex Consani and Mona Tougaard chat about how they find time to read despite all the chaos backstage. (Girls after our own hearts!)
