The Labour Party has blocked Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham from standing as a parliamentary candidate in a move that is likely to cause a major political backlash.

A 10-strong panel from the party’s ruling National Executive Committee decided that Burnham should not be allowed to end his mayoral term early and stand as a parliamentary candidate in the forthcoming Gorton and Denton by-election.

“There will be a considerable political backlash,” one member of the NEC told the FT.
