‘Labubu’ Movie Made Official; Steven Levenson Joins As Co-Writer


Pop Mart and Sony Pictures Entertainment have made it official that a live-action Labubu movie is in the works based on the former’s The Monsters universe. As previously announced, Wonka and Paddington multi-BAFTA-nominated filmmaker Paul King is directing. He’ll be co-writing the script with Steven Levenson. The project remains in early development, a mix of live-action and CGI.

The project was announced at the Paris stop of The Monsters global exhibition tour celebrating their 10th anniversary.

Kasing Lung will serve as an executive producer, and the producers will be King, Michael Schaefer (The Martian) and Wenxin She (A Beautiful Day in the NeighborhoodWish Dragon). Brittany Morrissey will be overseeing for Sony Pictures.

Lung, who was born in Hong Kong and raised in the Netherlands, first brought Labubu and The Monsters to life in a series of picture books collectively known as The Monsters Trilogy in 2015.

Levenson is an award-winning screenwriter and playwright. His work includes Dear Evan Hansen, which earned him a Tony Award; tick tick… BOOM!, for which he received a WGA Award nomination; and Fosse/Verdon, which garnered him an Emmy nomination.
