LAPD Investigating Rob Reiner & Wife Deaths; No Suspect Identified

In an emergency press conference called tonight by Los Angeles Police Department, Deputy Chief Alan S. Hamilton said the LAPD is currently conducting an ongoing homicide investigation into the two deaths at Rob Reiner‘s Brentwood home. The official did not confirm the identities of the deceased as prolific actor-director Reiner and his wife, the photographer-producer Michele Singer Reiner, adding that the organization has “not identified a suspect at this time” and is not pursuing any persons of interest.

The couple were found dead in their Brentwood home earlier today, from apparent stab wounds, though Hamilton would not comment on that reporting. LAFD received an urgent call of an “incident” at the Reiner home, located on the 200 block of South Chadbourne Avenue, at approximately 3:40 p.m. this Sunday. The organization arrived at the residence soon afterward, with the LAPD on the scene within the hour. Authorities had previously described the situation as a “family incident.”

In what was deemed a “somewhat frustrating” and combative conference by ABC Los Angeles, Hamilton fielded questions from journalists and locals, refraining from giving additional details, including information about who called authorities and if family members are being interviewed. Hamilton also avoided classifying the investigation as a murder one, deeming it a “death investigation,” though procedures are being handled by the Robbery-Homicide Division.

Hamilton added that more information would be forthcoming, pending an imminent search warrant to gain access into the crime scene and be able to conduct a sweep around the surrounding area. The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office would be releasing the identities of the victims, he said.

The deputy chief noted the investigation will continue over the coming days, as detectives, forensics and technical advisers descend on the area. While Hamilton admitted the organization is speaking to every family member they can, he would not confirm if anyone is currently being spoken to. Additionally, Hamilton declined to comment on reporting that daughter Romy Reiner placed the distress call. He also sidestepped a question concerning People‘s report that the couple was slain via knife by their son Nick Reiner.

Despite the lack of further details, LA Mayor Karen Bass shared in a statement earlier today: “This is a devastating loss for our city and our country. Rob Reiner’s contributions reverberate throughout American culture and society, and he has improved countless lives through his creative work and advocacy fighting for social and economic justice. An acclaimed actor, director, producer, writer, and engaged political activist, he always used his gifts in service of others. Personally, I am heartbroken by the tragic loss of Rob and his wife Michele. I knew Rob and have tremendous respect for him. Among his numerous contributions, Rob helped create First 5 California, a landmark initiative funded by a tobacco tax to support early childhood development programs. He and Michele fought for early childhood development and marriage equality, working to overturn Proposition 8. They were true champions for LGBTQ+ rights. I want to thank all of the first responders who were called to this tragic event. The investigation is ongoing. I’m holding all who loved Rob and Michele in my heart.”
