Might you be familiar with the brand Grey’s? Maybe not yet, but soon you’re bound to be, along with the name Emily Grey. The Central Saint Martins graduate decided to create her own namesake label in 2024, driven by a strong desire to produce high-quality clothing with integrity. Her first collection, launched for the fall 2024 season, consisted of 12 pieces, all knitwear. “Starting a brand in today’s current landscape requires real intention; every decision feels significant,” said Grey at an appointment at The News showroom. “From the beginning, I had a strong interest in menswear, focusing on quality, refinement, and utility with knitwear as the core of the practice. I think a lot about longevity and how pieces live in a wardrobe over time.”
The brand has expanded, adding moleskin and leather fabrications for a more complete wardrobe for the everyday woman. Over the last year, it has even become a fan favorite amongst the IYKYK fashion crowd, with the First Lady of New York City, Rama Duwaji, wearing a Grey’s knit sweater and skirt for a magazine feature and actress Uma Thurman sporting a knit dress on a recent cover. The brand has also become popular with small independent boutiques around the world. Outline’s Margaret Austin and Hannah Rieke told Vogue in 2025 that “Emily (of Grey’s) uses the most beautiful fabrics and there is a real timelessness to her collections that I think really resonates with our shoppers.”
So what makes the brand so special? Well, for starters, Grey is focused on creating a wardrobe for the women who love functional clothing that also has the feel of ultra-luxe fashion. “I was looking at couture pieces and their construction with the idea of taking those ideas and making them relaxed and more comfortable on the body,” said the designer. A silk chenille knit dress mimics that structure but adds a touch of softness, balancing fashion and functionality. Grey’s version of a pants set is a supple moleskin leather flight jacket and trousers that are fit for any occasion.
