Your guide to what Trump’s second term means for Washington, business and the world
Donald Trump said he will this week announce an executive order that establishes a single federal rule for regulating artificial intelligence, as the president seeks to maintain US dominance in the technology.
“I will be doing a ONE RULE Executive Order this week,” the president said in a Truth Social post about AI, published Monday morning. “We are beating ALL COUNTRIES at this point in the race, but that won’t last long if we are going to have 50 states, many of them bad actors, involved in RULES and the APPROVAL PROCESS.”
The president had last month promised to institute “one Federal Standard” to govern the technology, to combat what he characterised as “over-regulation” by individual US states.
However, the potential move prompted a backlash among prominent Republicans and Maga supporters, who have accused him of caving to Big Tech donors.
“You can’t expect a company to get 50 Approvals every time they want to do something,” Trump said in his Monday post. “THAT WILL NEVER WORK!”
