Alma Ann Smith (August 1, 1964 – March 3, 1983) was a young woman who was murdered by Gary Ridgway in SeaTac or Auburn, Washington, on March 3, 1983. She was Ridgway’s nineteenth known murder victim.
Background
Alma was born on August 1, 1964, in Walla Walla, Washington, where she spent her childhood. When asked, her best friend described her as being extremely generous.
When Alma was a teenager, she began running away from home, often traveling to Seattle, Washington. At some point in her teenage years, she became involved in sex work.
Disappearance
Alma was last seen on March 3, 1983, in SeaTac, Washington, along Pacific Highway South. It’s unknown what happened to her afterward.
Discovery
Alma’s remains were discovered in Auburn, Washington, near Star Lake Road, on April 2, 1984. Her cause of death couldn’t be determined, though her case was deemed a homicide.
Alma’s remains were found at around the same time as three other sets of remains, identified as belonging to Delores Williams, Sandra Gabbert and Terri Milligan.
Aftermath
It’s unknown if Alma’s case was connected to the Green River killings after her disappearance, but all the remains found were connected soon after their discovery.
It wouldn’t be until 2001 that her killer, Gary Ridgway, would be apprehended. He confessed to luring Alma to his home and strangling her. He was convicted of her murder, along with the murders of forty-eight other women.
