On the morning of March 24, 2003, Melinda McGhee returned home to Atmore, Alabama, after finishing an overnight nursing shift at a nursing home in nearby Bay Minette. She had been working through the night and arrived at her home on Kent Road at approximately 8:00 a.m.
Nothing about that morning suggested that it would be the last time anyone would hear from her.
Her husband, Troy McGhee, was at work at Masland Carpets. Their two children were staying with a babysitter, while Troy’s son from a previous relationship had gone to the dentist.
Around 8:30 a.m., Melinda spoke by telephone with both her husband and her mother. Those conversations were apparently ordinary. After that, however, contact with Melinda abruptly stopped.
She was never heard from again.
Troy returned home shortly before 4:00 p.m. and immediately realized something was wrong. Melinda was nowhere in the house. He contacted authorities and reported her missing.
Investigators soon discovered troubling evidence inside the residence. There were signs of a violent struggle, including blood and other indications that someone had been injured or attacked. Yet investigators did not find evidence showing that a person had been killed inside the house.
Melinda’s belongings also suggested that she had not simply decided to leave.
Her vehicle was located near the residence with the keys locked inside. Her purse and cellular telephone were still at the house. There was no obvious indication that she had intentionally left for an extended period or planned to disappear.
Based on the scene, authorities came to believe that Melinda may have been attacked while she was asleep and forcibly taken from her home.
The circumstances were particularly unsettling because of where the family lived. Their house stood at the end of a dead-end dirt road in a rural area near Poarch, Alabama, with only three other residences on the road. Melinda and Troy had also been married for approximately seven years, and according to the information available to investigators, they had been looking forward to a weekend trip to the beach.
There was no known reason for Melinda to simply abandon her family.
As the investigation continued, authorities examined whether her disappearance could be connected to violent crimes in other parts of the South.
One person investigators considered was Derrick Todd Lee, the Louisiana serial-killing suspect who was accused of murdering multiple women in the Baton Rouge area. Lee had been charged in connection with six southern Louisiana women’s deaths and was also investigated in relation to other murders, sexual assaults, and disappearances.
Melinda’s disappearance drew attention because of similarities between her case and the disappearance and murder investigation involving Randi Mebruer. However, Melinda vanished roughly 250 miles from Baton Rouge, and investigators did not regard Lee as a particularly strong suspect in her case.
Another suspected serial killer, Jeremy Bryan Jones, was also examined as a possible suspect. Jones had been connected by investigators to other violent crimes, including the disappearance and murder investigation involving Patrice Endres.
Despite these leads, no connection has ever been established publicly that explains what happened to Melinda.
More than two decades later, the central questions remain unanswered.
What happened inside Melinda’s home that morning? Who attacked her? And where was she taken after she disappeared?
The physical evidence strongly suggested that Melinda was the victim of foul play, but investigators have never been able to determine her ultimate fate.
Melinda McGhee remains missing, and her case continues to be considered an unsolved suspected abduction.
Her family was left with the painful reality that a woman who had gone home after work, spoken with the people closest to her, and expected to continue with her normal life simply vanished from her own home.
To this day, Melinda has never been found.
